Reine Text:
Known for his rich use metaphor in his works, Ariel Vargassal paints an empowered and glamorous Coatlicue: Aztec earth goddess and mother of the Gods. With a contemporary spin on the legend of the feather and Coatlicue, we see her lifting a rooster, symbolizing the birth of her son, Huitzilopochtli, the Aztec sun and war God.
– Sway Gaytan (curator)
Artist Text:
The creator, is the mother of all gods in Aztec mythology. The legend states that, One day Coatlicue, an earth goddess, was sweeping atop Coatepec (or Snake Mountain), when a feather fell into her apron. At that moment, she immaculately conceived a son, whose name was Huitzilopochtli (a sun and warrior god). Based on this story, I brought Coatlicue to modern day life with an edgy goddess look, with the metaphor of the seduction by the feather in mind, but not as she was seduced rather more in charge of being seduced, she is the image of beauty, power, creation, and humanity. After all, she was considered the mother of all Gods reigning over humankind.
