Marie Sauvage, renowned shibari artist, enters the fine contemporary art world with “Gatekeeper to Heaven or Hell”. While in Florence during the first year of quarantine in 2020, Marie took a series of self-portraits, choosing this final image to bind with her first set of ropes. The image, in soft-focused splendor, captures the enigmatic artist against a classic italian fresco. The baroque frame is sensually tied; imbued with the sentimental journey between Marie and her muses.

Shibari is inherently erotic but can be used as a calming and meditative practice, and I found that self-tying helped me get through the anxieties of the first lockdown.
